SAFE Strategy Components in The Gambia

Surgery

  • The Gambia has a developed capacity for TT surgery conducted by trained community ophthalmic nurses. 
  • It is estimated that the backlog of TT surgery has already been substantially reduced.
  • 265 TT surgeries were carried out during 2007.

Antibiotics

  • In 2007, 41,409 Zithromax treatments were administered during an ITI-supported mass drug administration, the first in The Gambia.

Facial Cleanliness
Facial cleanliness component is advocated by the national program through child-to-child-strategies, TV/radio messages, and involvement of local organizations. 

Environmental Improvement
2006 national surveys found that almost 98% of population has access to functional water supply and 84.5% of households have latrines or access to functional latrine.
