NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR TRACHOMA CONTROL

  • National Trachoma Control Program began in 2002
  • National Program Coordinator: Dr Amza Abdou

In 2007, Niger’s National Trachoma Control Program was integrated with four other Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) programs in 19 districts in the Tillaberi, Tahoua and Dosso Regions.


History: ITI in Niger

ITI has supported trachoma control activity in Niger since December 2001.  In 2007, an expansion of the NTD-control program in Niger allowed an additional 50% of the population to be treated for trachoma. 

Niger Surgeries

SAFE Strategy
  • Downloadable list of SAFE strategy implementing partners in Niger
  • Surgery:    Over 2,800 TT surgeries were carried out in 2007 by trachoma control partners.
  • Antibiotics:  ITI supported the administration of almost 6 million Zithromax treatments in Niger in 2007.

 

Facial Cleanliness and Environmental Improvement

  • Environmental Improvement:  In 2007, WAWI, Ministry of Water and UNICEF built 270 water sources in Diffa, Zinder and Maradi.  The Carter Center constructed 6,776 family latrines in these regions and the PNLCC built  10,725 family latrines
