History: ITI in Tanzania

ITI began supporting trachoma control activities in Tanzania in 1999 and established a Country Office the same year.  Tanzania and Morocco are the first countries in the world to implement the SAFE strategy.

 

NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR TRACHOMA CONTROL

  • Tanzania’s National Trachoma Control Program began in 1999
  • National Program Coordinator:  Dr. Grace Saguti

SAFE Strategy
  • Download a list of SAFE strategy implementing partners in Tanzania.
  • Surgery:  A total number of 21,183 people underwent lid surgery for trachomatous trichiasis (TT) in Tanzania since 1999.  In 2007, 2,910 people underwent TT surgery.
  • Antibiotics:  Over 15.1 million treatments of Zithromax have been administered in Tanzania since 1999.  During the year 2007, ITI supported the administration of close to 5 million treatments.



Facial Cleanliness and Environmental Improvement

  • Following support from the Foundation for Civil Society, ten districts will benefit from a three year grant focusing on hygiene promotion.

  • Progress towards increasing new water sources following the scaling up of Tanzania’s rural water supply and sanitation program will benefit those living in trachoma endemic districts.
