Democratic Republic of Congo
Before 2013, very little information existed on the endemicity of trachoma in DRC. There are 519 health zones in DRC, Trachoma is suspected in the northern, eastern and southern parts of the country, which are bordering endemic districts in Central African Republic (CAR), South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia, respectively. The urban areas in these areas are not suspected to be endemic. Trachoma mapping started in DRC in 2014 with support from ENVISION and the Global Trachoma Mapping Project (GTMP).
CURRENT IMPLEMENTATION STATUS
2016 was DRC’s first year of implementation for trachoma. MDAs were conducted in three districts, Kipushi, Pweto and Moba.
There is still significant mapping to complete in DRC. 35 health zones are scheduled for baseline mapping in June, in addition to TRAs in 51 health zones. After surveys and TRAs, the estimated number of suspected endemic districts will be revised.
