ITI is a program of The Task Force for Global Health.
The National Prevention of Blindness Program (PNLCC) was established in Niger in 1987. The
Ministries of Health, Education, and Water and Social Development formed a National
Trachoma Task Force in 1999. National trachoma prevalence surveys were conducted in 1997-1999 and implementation of the full SAFE strategy began in the Zinder region in 2002. The first national strategic plan for trachoma control was adopted in 2004.
Partners in SAFE implementation have included ITI, The Carter Center, HKI, World Vision and UNICEF.
CURRENT IMPLEMENTATION STATUS
Zithromax® distribution from 2016 was delayed to May 2017 due to delays in obtaining Mectizan. This follows a previous delay of 2015 MDAs to February 2016.
Impact are currently being conducted in Aguié, Tchirozérine and Bilma. Surveillance surveys are currently being conducted in Say, Téra, Tillaberi, Fillingue and Ouallam.
