Trachoma has been identified as a public health problem in Chad since the 1970’s. Surveys in 1972, 1985 and more recently 2000-2004 were conducted in 12 of the 22 regions. Chad became a member of the GET 2020 alliance in 2002. In 2015 Chad completed additional mapping using the GTMP platform.
Chad began full SAFE implementation in 2013 with the Mongo district, and expanded to four regions in 2014. SAFE strategy in Chad has been supported by OPC, Sightsavers, LCIF, CBM and DIFD. The four regions of Guera, Ouaddai, Salamat and Sila, have completed three rounds of treatment, and will be resurveyed this year.
A meeting was conducted in February 2017 for the extension of the SAFE strategy into 15 new regions. With this expansion, the country will have achieved full scale-up of the trachoma program.
